Contrary to what the cable TV industry might be telling you, DSL service provides a very real alternative to broad band cable high speed Internet access in terms of speed, reliability, and over all quality of the connection. In fact, there are a number of technological advantages that a DSL connection has over broad band cable high speed Internet!

The advantage that will be the most obvious to the most people is consistent download speed. With DSL, you sign up for a certain level of service that's defined by the download speed that it will deliver. There are a number of things that will limit download speed with DSL, including the distance of your home from a central office and the type of DSL service that you sign up for, but that's taken into account when you sign up and the speed that you get is the speed that you pay for! With broad band cable high speed Internet, a high download speed is often marketed to you but not guaranteed in your terms of service. That means that with cable you get whatever level of service you happen to end up with and you're pretty much stuck with it.

There are a number of things that can degrade broad band cable high speed Internet that can make its speed much lower than it should be, higher some times than others, and generally unpredictable and somewhat disappointing. For example, the fact that Internet data shares the same cable as the cable TV service that supplies your whole neighborhood with entertainment- as well as this form of Internet access- means that your neighbors can effect the performance of your Internet connection. There are two ways that this can happen. First of all, the pure volume of Internet traffic over the cable system of your neighborhood can drag down the access speed for everyone. Second, the nature of the signal over the cable means that it can be disrupted by various kinds of home entertainment system components that you and your neighbors have tied into the cable system either directly or indirectly. This means that as things like video game consoles, DVD players, and Digital Video Recorders can all offer potential disruptions of your high speed Internet service!

With DSL none of the above factors are a concern. That's because DSL is delivered over your home phone line and your home phone line represents a separate and distinct link to the outside world that you don't have to share with anyone. The same is true for the DSL service itself. With this type of technology, you're connected as directly as possible with the infrastructure of the Internet and you don't have to share that connection with anyone else, no matter how close to you they live! The fact that with a DSL connection you have your own distinct link to the rest of the world, means that none of the problems associated with a shared cable connection are a problem. When you sit down to get online, you'll be able to get the fast access to the Internet no matter what time it is or what your neighbors happen to be doing online!

With a high speed Internet connection thanks to DSL Internet specials and technology you'll have full access to all of the great resources that the Internet has to offer, and you'll be able to take advantage of it completely on your own terms!
