The Internet has been a huge boon to people all over the world in terms of the different options that it provides for entertainment, business, education, and meeting new people. With all of these uses for the Internet- and with how data intensive many of today's Internet applications are- you need an extremely fast connection in order to take advantage of everything!
Unfortunately, figuring out how to get the fastest possible Internet connection is not the easiest thing in the world. For example, you might recall that people were excited about being able to upgrade their dial up modems to a new speed that was twice as fast as the older modems. You shouldn't be mislead by that excitement though. Dial up is still the slowest form of Internet connection and much slower than most people need these days. DSL is another form of Internet connection that's often marketed as a high speed connection, but while DSL can reach speeds that are about fifty times faster than the speed of a dial up connection, many of them only provide about five times more speed. Internet connections that rely on satellite technology are also available, but they generally aren't any faster than DSL and cost a lot more than any other form of Internet connection. Also, because of the distance that the data has to travel between the surface of the Earth and the satellite, this technology has a very significant time lag built into it. This time lag isn't particularly noticeable when it comes to downloading things, but it can wreak havoc with real time applications like video conferencing and multiplayer computer gaming!
The ideal form of Internet connection is actually based on the same technology that cable TV is based on. As such, cable TV providers like Time Warner Cable have become the country's premiere Internet service providers. Time Warner cable offers download speeds that start out at a level of service that provides six mbps and tops out at eight mbps. The six mbps, is over one hundred times faster than the best that you can possibly get out of a dial up connection. Naturally the 8 mbps level of service is more appealing!
At the kinds of speeds that are available through Time Warner Cable's high speed Internet service, the Internet truly becomes more usable. That's because at those speeds, the Internet is fully accessible in a number of different ways. For example, you have to have heard of streaming Internet video and how it provides access to amateur videos through sites like YouTube, but if you've tried watching streaming video with a slower Internet connection then you've probably been disappointed. That's because video take so much data and you have to be able to move that data more quickly in order to keep it from bottlenecking. With the download speeds that you can get through a cable TV company like Time Warner though, there is no bottleneck. This means that you can watch the video just like you'd watch TV.
Video is just a small example of all of the things that you can do with a high speed Internet connection from Time Warner.
