Direct TV is well known as the biggest and best provider of great television programming. It's programming packages like Total Choice Premier with its two hundred and fifty plus channels are legendary when it comes to size and quality of programming. Direct TV also offers plenty of flexibility in its programming packages when it comes to how they can be customized and what kinds of additional channels can be added to them. The thing that a lot of people aren't as aware of is the high level of technology that allows the programming to be delivered in the first place. All of the programming that Direct TV transmits to its subscribers is sent in digital television format. Any programming that isn't already in digital format is converted into digital television, and then all of it is encrypted to prevent non subscribers from watching it. Then it's compressed using MPEG-2 (or MPEG-4 in the case of HDTV programming) data compression technology. Once the programming has been converted, encrypted, and compressed it's transmitted up to a bunch of Direct TV's satellites in geosynchronous orbit thousands of miles above the Earth's equator and then transmitted back down to the surface of the Earth all over North America. Once the signals carrying all of the programming reach the surface of the Earth, they're picked up by individual Direct TV satellite dishes and then transmitted to receivers in subscribers' homes. These satellite receivers then clean out any interference from the signal, then decompress and decrypt the signal back into incredibly clear and crisp television programming.

Besides an excellent picture quality that holds up to the rigors of being transmitted through thousand of miles of space and twice through the Earth's atmosphere, Direct TV Channels of digital television also allows it to provide interactive features which greatly enhance the enjoyment of the television viewing experience. For example, just imagine what it would be like if you had a programming package with over two hundred channels and the only way you had to figure out what you want to watch was by flipping through the channels. You'd probably get a much smaller programming package, or maybe even cancel your subscription altogether. To scroll through that many channels would just become too frustrating! Direct TV understands this which is why it provides an on screen program listing feature. Direct TV's on screen program listing can be brought up on your TV screen in the form of a table. Each row of the table represents a channel and each column represents a time slot. Each cell is occupied by information about a program. That information includes the name of the program and a summary of the plot or description of what the program is about. You can read about all of the programs that will be offered in the near future as well and even go directly to a channel just by highlighting and selecting it. This is a much more convenient way of dealing with hundreds of channels!

Direct TV offers you the option of selecting extra technologies that can complement your programming package no matter which one you choose. Digital Video Recording is one of the most popular technologies because of the degree of freedom it can give you to determine when you watch TV. A digital video recorder does this by recording your favorite shows onto a built in hard disk. HDTV is also a great way to watch TV because it provides a wide screen and an even higher quality picture than Digital Television does. All of these features make Direct TV the best choice for great TV technology.
