A couple of years ago, when I used to eat at this great Thai restaurant in El-Segundo, I had absolutely no idea that such an influential corporation as DirecTV was located right in the neighborhood. El-Segundo is actually a sleepy little community sandwiched between the Los Angeles airport (LAX) and the small, but very upscale beach communities of Manhattan and Redondo beaches. It’s only an half-hour drive (when traffic cooperates) from downtown Los Angeles by the 105 and 110 freeways, but can seem a world away on Saturday night when downtown El Segundo is almost deathly quite.
The fact is El Segundo is the home of DirecTV Group Inc. (I remember now, seeing their impressive, multi-story high rise that overlooks the airport, the ocean, and a good chunk of LA) They are providers of excellent digital television entertainment in the United States and even have a presence in Latin America, where they transmit programming to almost two million subscribers. DirecTV is divided into three different groups: DirecTV U.S., Network Systems, and the Latin American group.

DirecTV distributes video programs by satellite to both residential and commercial customers in the United States. It offers a vast array of college and professional sports content including NFL Sunday Ticket, a ton of movie choices, news and much more. DirecTV has about 15 million subscribers now.
The Network System provides Internet access to businesses and consumers and the private business networks are called VSAT. The DIRECTV Group was formerly known as Hughes Electronics Corporation. It changed its name in March of 2004 and it incorporated in Delaware in 1977.

DIRECTV was launched in 1994 and became the first satellite TV Company to deliver exceptional digital quality, television programs to a compact, pizza sized, 18-inch satellite dish. For the first time, this coverage across the nation provided a needed, convenient service for customers anywhere in the continental U.S. For the first time, customers in rural areas, who had no access to cable services, now could subscribe to digital television with multi-channel choices just like their city-dwelling counterparts.

These technological advances included the first on-screen, easy to use programming guides that enabled customers to quickly find the programs that interested them and access pay-per-view programs with their remote control. These pioneering technological breakthroughs have affected every aspect of the satellite TV as they set the standard for television entertainment.

As DIRECTV continues to push the envelope of television entertainment, it allows the consumer to define the type of control they want to over their entertainment choices. Exciting new technologies permit unprecedented control, such as DVR (digital video recording), HD (High Definition) and interactive programs. The sky is the limit with DIRECTV; over 15 million consumers had made the move to their satellite TV programming.
DirecTV made history by redefining the way Americans see TV. They will continue creating these wonderful advances as they deliver the future of entertainment.
