One thing that some people wonder about when they think about how new types of technology will influence how we watch TV in the future is how much of a threat online video will have on normal TV. According to Mark Cuban, the founder of HDNet, the answer is not much. Apparently, despite the fact that Internet video is growing in popularity, the general consensus in the TV industry is that online video is a complementary source of entertainment rather than a competing form of entertainment and that will be true for the foreseeable future.

For a number of years now, cable TV has been the underdog. There are a variety of reasons for this, but it really comes down to the fact that when satellite TV underwent a technological revolution back in the nineteen nineties, it suddenly became much more affordable and attractive for more people. It basically offered a larger selection of channels and a crisper picture than cable TV could provide at that time. Since then though, Comcast has taken the initiative to upgrade its technology to the point where it can be much more competitive with the satellite TV companies, and in many ways is now superior to those satellite TV companies.

Set top boxes have become something of a curse to home entertainment enthusiasts. The primary reason for this is that they keep accumulating in people's home entertainment centers. Set top boxes pretty much include everything that can add functionality to the TV set. This means that DVD players, cable boxes, satellite receivers, VCR's, some standalone DVR's, and many newer devices that import media directly from the home computer all count as set top boxes. Of course there are also devices that are more in the shape towers like computers and aren't really designed to sit on top of TV sets. These include most video gaming devices and many media center computers, but considering that most television sets aren't shaped in such a way as to have things sitting on top of them anyway, these devices might as well be classified as set top devices too.

Competition in the telecommunications industry is fierce. And for that reason, every company in the telecommunications industry is trying to get some kind of advantage over all of the others in order to stay afloat. In many ways, the constant strategizing isn't necessarily intended to boost the company's profits (although that is a bonus) so much as to keep a company from being swallowed up by the competition.

It seems as if when changes in technology appear, they appear all at once. For many years, nothing can be changing and then suddenly, everything changes. That is the way it seems to be happening with television technology. For many years television stayed pretty much the same other than the programming. Now, within the span of just a couple of years, we are undergoing the changeover of television formats to high definition television and the introduction of interactive television of all sorts. Interactive television capabilities are especially interested because they are appearing as a result of viewers wanting to be able to be a more active participant in their viewing experience. After decades of passively viewing television and accepting the programming schedules that networks executives have doled out, television viewers are now demanding to be able to better control when and what they watch.

Although many people may be unaware of it, we're in the middle of a battle between two types of technology that will be remembered for years to come. This battle is basically a format war between Toshiba's HD-DVD and Sony's Blu-ray high definition DVD formats. Both formats are capable of storing an entire movie in HDTV format on an individual disc the same size as a standard DVD or CD, and use blue laser technology to accomplish this. Even though the two formats use similar technologies they're incompatible in the sense that Blu-ray disc players can't read HD-DVD discs and HD-DVD players can't read Blu-ray discs.

Cable television went through a period of many years where it wasn't able to offer all of the services that satellite television companies offered. For instance, when satellite television companies were offering digital television service, cable companies were still offering analog. And, many cable companies offered fewer channels than the satellite TV companies. However, during those years, cable TV providers were hard at work at creating solutions to make cable television even better than satellite TV. This has resulted in an array of new technologies that have made cable television the provider of choice for most families. Among cable companies, Comcast is one of the foremost leaders in providing these new technologies and has created a service that not only rivals satellite television, but far surpasses it.
