New TV Technology 2016 CES In Las Vegas

Consumer Electronics Show (CES) always witnesses a huge participation from all the top TV manufacturers, who love to flaunt the latest technology they have in store for their consumers. The previous edition of CES left us with a glimpse of what this year’s CES might have for us. With 4K to 8K resolutions, with the constantly expanding screen sizes, and the ever increasing curves, the CES 2016 was one of the most anticipated events of the year and it did not disappoint either. Every year big guns like Sony, LG, Philips, and so on, come out with their latest television sets and this year’s event in Las Vegas was no exception either. But, 2016 is no ordinary year for television. 2015 saw flashes of the new TV technology that is all set to revamp the concept of TV, but 2016 is going to make it all a reality. If the show is anything to go by, 2016 is going to be a milestone year in the television history.

LED Backlighting

Sony is offering a 75-inch slim TV, XBR-X940D, complete with the direct LED backlighting system. The XBR- X930D comes in two versions – one with 55 inch screen, and the other with 65 inch screen. Both of them have the Slimline Backlight Drive Technology from Sony. This technology allows the television to offer better lighting for specific zone, while maintaining a slim body. Of the three models showcased from Sony, only XBR-X850D does not come with these features. However, all the three new models flaunted complete HDR-compatibility. These models, showcased in Las Vegas, use Sony’s display technology, Triluminos, with seamless HDR compatibility. Further, they are able to churn out crisp picture quality, thanks to the 4K Processor X1 inside them.

A Sony original, Backlight Masterdrive is what the company claims to be the future of displays. There were some prototypes that were on display at the show. This is a technology that seeks to do away with the shortcomings of the LCD and is being built as an alternative to OLED. With brightness levels peaking at 4000 nits and a large number of dimming zones, the Blacklight technology will be released over the coming years. Although OLED provides an exceptional picture quality, it is wrought with durability issues. This is why it has found very few takers among the TV manufacturers. If Backlight Masterdrive proves to be feasible, then it can become a serious replacement for OLED’s quality capabilities.

This is another serious contender against OLED, and has already proved its mettle. Panasonic’s DX900 series television flaunts this latest technology and promises superb contrast, and crystal clear picture quality. Despite ditching the OLED technology offering, these latest models will be able to rock top notch HDR, because of following the Honeycomb structure. What it means is that on the screen, the areas that are locally dimmed will always remain separated. This process removes any of the halo effect that LCDs

are infamous for and they also create rich contrasts on the screen. This is the reason that these models also flash the Ultra HD Premium badge and certification from THX.

The Smart Things
The new televisions from Samsung feature the SmartThings platform. This technology allows the users to connect all their smart devices to a central system. This centralized system turns every smart device in the home into the homeowner’s eyes and ears. The homeowners will be able to monitor each and every aspect of their house using this system. As the new Samsung televisions have this functionality built into them, they act as a monitor as well. This technology allows for video monitoring and storage of data, when necessary.

Transparent Screen
This has more of a ‘wow’ value than anything else. Samsung has come up with new transparent OLED screens. They are slim, beautiful, and exquisite to look at. It is not necessarily a brand new technology. This technology has been showcased before. But, it is certainly the first time that America has seen the transparent screens displayed at one of their electronic shows.

Panasonic also had a somewhat similar offering at the show with its Invisible Display. The company thinks that in a future living room, television should be visible only when it is in use. Planted on a bookshelf during the demo, the television looked like just a glass frame. But, as soon as it was turned on, it came to life. Once it was switched off, it went back to looking like a standard glass pane.

Flexible Display
If LG would have it, people would be carrying 18” television sets in their pockets. At the CES 2016, LG showcased a full HD screen that can be completely bent. The television can go all the way around and touch the other side. However, this is more of a prototype than a complete product of its own. It can also be seen as a functioning fundamental block of sorts that will be used to build bigger televisions. The company has plans to actually extrapolate this technology to 55” screens. There is no set date on when that would happen, but it would be a really cool addition to any living room.

In addition to a transparent screen, Samsung gave the CES 2016 the biggest television screen so far. The 170” SUHD covered an entire wall. Now, before you get any ideas, no, it is not some new giant television model from the manufacturer. In fact, this offering from Samsung aims to put a full stop to the size war in the television industry. The 170” mammoth television was built by combining together a number of 20” screens. This is an impressive feat, and a rather, game-changer in this industry. This kind of a modular approach will solve the higher costs of transporting bigger TV sets, because they can now be broken down into smaller pieces. Moreover, Samsung can now make one standard-sized television screen, which can then be used to make a bigger television screen.

Other than this, DISH Network Satellite TV is also offering its users an additional accessory called Hopper Go. This small unit can be connected to the Hopper and can store up to 100 hours of movies, shows, or anything they want from the television. This can then be carried along anywhere the user goes. This is not all. The HopperGo can also be used to create a private network, which can be further accessed by up to 5 different devices. This is huge. So, not only is Hopper 3 offering complete home entertainment options, it is also taking care of their entertainment need, while on the go.

8K technology is definitely the future. However, as of now, there is not much content that is available for 8K. There are not even many cameras that can record at that resolution. Camera manufacturers like Canon, NHK, and Sony, have produced some cameras that can record at 8K, but they are limited in number, and very costly at the present. Also, people would not be able to connect an 8K display to a regular DVD player, because four separate HDMI cables are required for streaming content to an 8K TV set. That’s because, one cable cannot support so much data transfer all by itself. New technology like 8K will sooner or later find its footing in the market. Of course, not everyone can afford 8K televisions right away. They cost over $100,000 now, and certainly not meant for the mass market at the present.

Whether it is movies, television shows or any other kind of videos, a platform has to be there which can support the content of this resolution. Cable providers are not going to upgrade their technology on their end until and unless a large number of people start opting for content of this high a resolution. The television technology has been developed and presented to the market by the manufacturers in order to prove that it is possible to develop such technology and to show the world a glimpse of the future.

This is how things have always worked in this industry. Even when the HD television came out, it took a while for them to make a dent in the market. It was primarily because of the love of sports that people opted for high definition television. People could see their favorite players in all their glory. Created by Sam Esmail, Mr. Robot is an American drama and psychological thriller. The show stars Rami Malek as the lead character, Elliot Alderson. It was released on multiple online and video on demand services in 2015. The first season of the show premiered on June 24, 2015, and even before the launch, the show had received a nod for the second season. The first season consisted of 10 episodes.

The show is produced by Igor Srubshchik, along with the executive producers, Steve Golin, Sam Esmail and Chad Hamilton. It is distributed by NBC Universal Television Distribution. From the very beginning, the show has constantly received excellent critical acclaim and has been nominated for a number of awards.

The series revolves around the life of a young man, Elliot Anderson, who works, at the cyber-security company, Allsafe, as a security engineer. It appears that Elliot’s thought processes are significantly influenced by delusions and paranoia, as he is suffering from Clinical Depression and Social Anxiety Disorder. The only way in which the character is able to connect with people is by hacking their devices or online accounts, which is the main reason for him being a cyber-vigilante. One day, he is recruited by a mysterious insurrectionary anarchist known by the name of Mr. Robot. After that, he joins “fsociety”, which is a team of hacktivists, with a mission to take down one of the largest corporations in the world, E Corp, by cancelling all their debts. The show became all the more interesting with the revelation that E Corp is one of the biggest clients of Allsafe.

The main protagonist of the show, Elliot Alderson, is portrayed by the actor Rami Malek. He is vigilant hacker and also a security engineer at Allsafe Cybersecurity. He lives an isolated life, away from people, due to his social anxiety disorder. He considers hacking as the only plausible way for him to interact with people. The character of Mr. Robot is played by the actor Christian Slater, who is an anarchist. He recruits Elliot into society and gives him the alias Edward Alderson. His fellow mate at fsociety, Darlene, is played by the American actor, Carly Chaikin. Alderson’s colleague at Allsafe, Angela Moss is portrayed by Portia Doubleday.

4K televisions were one of the latest new things on the TV market, but they have recently been coming down to mainstream prices. In fact this year there were no 4K content announcements even though there had been the year before. If you didn’t already know, 4K televisions are named as such because they display 4,000 pixels. The actual amount tends to be around 4096 x 2160 pixels for DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives) 4K televisions. 1080P also obviously stands for 1080 pixels.

You may already know that Samsung and LG are and have been competitive revivals in making TVs. This year Samsung has brought out SUHD, which is a line of LED LCDs. These new televisions are meant to compete against OLED TVs. OLED televisions have provided some of the best images ever seen. UHD essentially means Ultra High Definition, and it is in some sense another way of saying 4K.

The S evidently does not stand for any specific word, but serves as an indicator for the high quality of Samsung’s flagship products. The biggest thing that makes the new LED LCD TVs so impressive are the features they provides. Apart from that it is not too particularly interesting, it is just a Samsung LCD TV with 4K/UHD resolution, and it is current, so it is a high-end 2015 television.

Most SUHD TVs have curved screens. The new features it provides could have an impact on the old picture quality that older LCD TVs are known to have. LG has introduced new OLED televisions, all of which offer 4K resolution. OLED stands for organic light-emitting diode. LG is selling some very big TVs, the biggest of which is a 77-inch flexible television. One reason that OLED TVs have always been so great is their near perfect black levels and wide viewing angles. Even if you are sitting beside the TV and not in front of it, it will be easier to see than it is with other televisions. Like the SUHD, OLEDs also offer nano crystals/quantum dots to make a better image possible.

Curved TVs are one of the major distinguishing factors between the SUHD and OLED televisions. Samsung and LG are evidently the only manufacturers that offer such curved televisions in the United States, but Samsung has provided more curved TVs than LG. The curve is said to have no impact on the visual experience the TV offers and seems to only apply to aesthetic appearances. While LG and Samsung put some focus on curved television sets other companies, like Sharp, Sony—and LG too— are bringing out some thinner TVs. Sony has the thinnest LCD on the globe right now, it is only 0.2 inches or 5mm deep. Other manufacturers will soon be coming out with their thinner versions too.

The other big thing about the new TVs this year are new versions of homebrew smart operating systems. LG’s version is called Web OS 2.0 and it is said to be more efficient and faster than the original—it may also offer more customization. Samsung’s new system is called Tizen and it, evidently, has faster response time, a new interface, and a it will supposedly be open-source.

It sounds just like yesterday when 4K TVs were “the thing” to own in the house. Now, they are already so last year. They are rapidly dropping in price, and naturally, the TV manufacturers need something new and exciting to sell their top of the range flagship televisions. Thankfully, there is no dearth of options for them. There is just so much technology just waiting to hit the consumers that the manufacturers simply have to choose which ones they will bestow their grace upon. Here is a list of some of the coolest advancements in TV technology to watch for this year.

8K

No, we are not referring to some futuristic standard that will one day be made possible. 8K is right here, right now. Sharp has just released the world’s first 8K television recently. At 8K, or as it is more commonly known, Full Ultra HD, provides an amazing resolution of 7680 X 4320 pixels. That’s roughly 38 million pixels on a single screen, which is about four times the resolution of 4K TVs.

Earlier this year, experts observed that for an average person to be able to differentiate between the picture quality of 4K and 8K resolutions, the TVs should be at least 77 inches wide. Sharp clearly took this as a challenge, and its new 8K television is a massive 85 inch in size. But, don’t go running off to buy this one yet. Right now it costs a fortune at $133,000 and may not be worth the price tag for home use. You see, there aren’t any 8K programs to watch in the market yet. Frankly speaking, the content publishers and broadcasters are still catching up with the 4K technology, and it will be some time before 8K becomes a mainstream tech..

High Dynamic Range (HDR)

The most important aspect of a TV is its ability to produce good contrasts. HDR technology is able to produce brighter whites and darker blacks than is possible by the present TVs. This is possible because the HDR technology is able to command a significantly wider range of colors for producing high quality pictures. The technology also makes use of local dimming techniques, which provide a high contrast ratio. The results are stunning – whites that are brighter than LED and OLED TVs, and blacks that are much closer to pitch black.

Just because the technology is great, it doesn’t mean that the manufacturers are going to make our life any easier. Driven by their cutthroat competition, they are giving this technology their own fancy names – Wide Color LED (LG), Dynamic Range Remaster (Panasonic), and so on. Although these are nothing more than marketing stunts, the technology they all refer to is still the same. However, there is no industry standard agreed upon by the manufacturers on HDR so far. So, it will be some time before an HDR TV hits the shelves near your home. Till then, take comfort in the knowledge that Warner Bros. and Dolby have together released 3 HDR movies this year – Edge of Tomorrow, Lego Movie, and Into the Storm.

Quantum Dots (QD)

Quantum dots sound less tech and more marketing. Well, they are a marketing tactic for sure, but that is not all they are. What the TV manufacturers are referring to as quantum dots, are basically small nano- size particles, which produce light of a particular color, when bombarded with energy, such as a light source. You see, in traditional LCD TVs, white LEDs produce the light, which is then shone upon blue color filters. This produces a wide, unfocused light, which cannot be used to create rich colors. On the other hand, when light from blue LEDs is shone upon quantum dots, they produce very specific lights in accordance with their size. The result is an immensely improved contrast ratio and color saturation.

QD is not exactly a 2015 invention. Sony had released a QD TV as far back as 2013 itself. However, other manufacturers, including Samsung, have taken a shine to this technology only recently, and it is becoming a hit now. Of course, Samsung had to give it their own name. They are calling their TVs equipped with this technology as SUHD TVs. The funny part is that the “S”, according to Samsung, does not even stand for anything at all. However, the “UHD” refers to the Ultra HD, or 4K technology. Whatever be the name, Samsung is quite bullish on this technology and intends to compete with LG’s OLED TVs head on sailing on it. Speaking about OLED TVs, they are dropping in price pretty fast, and are proving to be more reliable than before. QD surely has a tough competition ahead, since OLEDs clearly produce much better quality pictures.

World’s first 8k Ultra High Definition Display

What! Is this some Star Wars futuristic thingy? No, this is nothing like that. As explained above, LCD TVs make use of light from white LEDs and blue color filters to produce colors that are not so great. Two TV manufacturers, Philips and Hisense, are addressing this issue in their own way by making use of lasers. Instead of white LEDs, they are using red lasers, and cyan LEDs to shine light on red, blue and green color filters. This technique, they claim, produces remarkably better quality colors and pictures, than what is seen on any LCD TVs so far. This is not all theory either. Philips has already released a TV embedded with this technology, and the picture quality on this 4K TV is something to behold.

Gesture Control TVs

Microsoft admittedly blew everyone’s mind when it released Kinect with its Xbox One. Although not many game developers have made use of the technology, there is no denying its awesomeness. Now PrimeSense, the company that is the brains behind the gesture control for Kinect, is bringing gesture control technology to televisions. Before Apple bought PrimeSense, the company had plans to release a TV equipped with gesture control technology. Well, now Apple has other plans for it.

Apple will be releasing the gesture control technology of PrimeSense either on its upcoming set-top- boxes, or on a new television set itself. Only time will tell. Imagine being able to flick through the channels, swipe to select shows, and raising or lowering your hand to control volume. All of this will soon be possible. Will that mark the end of the era of remote controls? Let’s wait and see.

Limitless – New CBS TV Show

Limitless is a new crime drama produced by CBS. It’s based on the movie of the same name which starred Bradley Cooper as a down on his luck writer who discovers a drug which enhances his intelligence, and also sends him on a conspiratorial quest to discover the origins of the drug. The film in turn is based on the novel “The Dark Fields” by Alan Glynn.

Bradley Cooper also appears in a recurring role, and is an executive producer of the show. With the latest television and Internet technology from Time Warner Cable Internet Service you can watch all the previous and future episodes online or with the TWC TV service.

Plot

The protagonist of the series, Brian Finch (played by Jake McDorman) accidentally stumbles upon a drug called NZT-48, which enhances the neural capacity of the brain, allowing for enhanced learning as well as perfect memory and recall. The drug is not without severe side effects, however; it tends to kill the user within a short period of time. For reasons revealed in the show, Brian Finch is immune to the dangers of NZT-48, and for this reason the FBI chooses to work with him instead of arresting him. This is done in order to study him. In return for his co-operation, Finch is given a job at the FBI and uses the drug to solve hard-to-prove cases for the FBI in return for a steady supply of NZT-48.

Production

The distribution company for the network, CBS Television Distribution, distributes the show.  The executive producers for the show are Bradley Cooper, Todd Phillips, Ryan Kavanaugh, Tucker Tooley, Tom Forman, Heather Kadin, Marc Webb, Craig Sweeny, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.

Limitless is filmed on location in New York City. The running time for each episode is between forty three and forty five minutes. After the success of the pilot and initial episodes, the show has been commissioned for a full series of twenty-two episodes. Changes to the direction have occurred throughout, as the formula for the show has been tweaked. For instance, where the pilot was a dark, crime drama styled show, throughout the ten episodes of the series so far, elements of comedy have been introduced, giving the show a lighter feel more akin to a comedy-drama than a crime drama.

If You Aren’t Watching Bates Motel, You are Snoozing

Earlier this year, A&E announced that they renewed their horror drama series Bates Motel for a fourth–and fifth!–season, which is projected to air in 2016 and 2017. This decision made Bates Motel the longest-running original drama to air on A&E in the history of the network. Fans of the show were not surprised by the renewal, nor were most TV fans who have kept up with the reception of Bates Motel by both audiences and critics throughout its three year run (so far).

The premise of the series is fairly simple: it is a prequel to the hit 1960 horror film, Psycho, directed by Alfred Hitchcock; although there is one distinct difference: the film, which was based on a novel of the same name by Robert Bloch, is set in 1960 while the prequel sets events in contemporary times.

The show stars Vera Farmiga as Norma Bates and Freddie Highmore as Norman Bates. Each season explores the growing darkness in both Norman and Norma, who are anything but (excuse the pun) normal. The idea behind the series is to give viewers a glimpse of what happened before the infamous events of the Psycho film and novel: how did Norman Bates become the Norman Bates we know and fear in the Hitchcock film?

In addition to Highmore and Farmiga, who have both earned critical praise and even awards for their performances in the series, the show stars: Max Theirot as Dylan Massatt, an estranged son of Norma who does not appear in the film or the book; Olivia Cooke as Emma Decody, Norman’s best friend who suffers from an illness that ultimately makes Norman fiercely protective of her; Nicola Peltz as Bradley Martin, a classmate of Norman who has a tumultuous relationship with him; Nestor Carbonell as Sheriff Alex Romero, the sheriff of the small town Norma and Norman live in; as well as Kenny Johnson as Caleb Calhoun, Norma’s older brother who knows more about Norman’s psyche than even his own mother.

Bates Motel has a lot to offer viewers, whether they are huge fans of the original Psycho film or book or are simply looking for an interesting drama with a scary spin. If you aren’t yet watching the show, you should really catch up—still need convincing? Let’s take a closer look at some of the best reasons you need to be watching Bates Motel.

Freddie Highmore gives a terrific performance

Most people will remember Freddie Highmore in far more innocent performances: he is best known for starring as Charlie Bucket in Tim Burton’s adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, as well as his role in Finding Neverland, a film about the real-life ‘Peter Pan’ author, J.M. Barrie.

Here, Highmore’s role is far more complex—and far more sinister. Highmore gives a terrific performance as the fragile, conflicted and ultimately dangerous Norman Bates, who struggles to come to terms with his dark deeds and conflicting emotions. Highmore has been nominated for numerous awards due to his performance in the show—and each nomination is well deserved.

Vera Farmiga is fantastic as well

If there is one actor in the show who can match Freddie Highmore’s performance, it’s Vera Farmiga, who stars as Norman’s mother, Norma. Vera Farmiga’s performance has been so critically recognized that she was even nominated for an Emmy Award for her performance as Norma Bates. Farmiga and Highmore have the perfect chemistry together—which is definitely necessary for the bizarre, inappropriate, and ultimately destructive relationship that the two share. Fans of the film will delight in seeing Vera Farmiga’s interpretation of the younger, but still quite mad, Norma Bates; who must struggle with her own demons while recognizing that her son has darker ones that she could have ever imagined.

Bates Motel isn’t a replacement for the Psycho film, or the book for that matter, nor are they technically considered a “canon” prequel to either version of Psycho. However, Bates Motel plays plenty of homage to the original story and the result is a prequel series that fits perfectly in with the tone, madness and sense of dread that Psycho brought (and still brings!) to the table.

If you’re a fan of the Hitchcock film, you won’t be disappointed by Bates Motel—in fact, you’ll probably get hooked!

The seasons aren’t too long

Each season of the show is 10 episodes long, which is perfect for this type of series—it doesn’t introduce a bunch of filler or pointless storylines or characters that go nowhere just to pad out 22 episodes. The ten episode format is perfect for portraying the slow decline and madness of Norma and Norman Bates. And it makes it easier to catch up if you haven’t yet started watching the show!

It’s a bit retro

 

Some fans were disappointed to learn that the show would not be set in the 1960s, but in the contemporary era. However, the show does maintain a somewhat retro vibe, especially when it comes to Norma and Norman. Both characters dress in a somewhat vintage style, and Norman even dabbles in retro hobbies like listening to record players.

Most shows would have set Bates Motel in a quiet, charming town that becomes uprooted by the violent actions of the troubled Norman Bates. Bates Motel, however, doesn’t go with that clichéd route: instead, the seemingly small, innocent town that Norma and Norman move into has its own dark, troubled secrets. The town is in a way a metaphor for Norman’s own psyche: on the surface it appears sweet, charming and friendly, but there is something rippling underneath that façade that bubbles to the surface every so often. This unique take on a “small town” makes the show doubly interesting to watch, and helps keeps viewers on their toes, since they never know what might happen in the town next. When you sign up with Charter Cable TV you have the security of knowing you will never miss any episodes.

 

Let’s Pick at American Pickers: Real Or Scripted?

Since its premiere in the summer of 2010, American Pickers has become one of the most popular shows to air on the History Channel—and one of the most popular antique and collectible based shows on television. The premise of the show is fairly simple: the show’s two hosts, Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz, have a resale shop where they sell various antiques and collectibles that they purchase during “picks.” The “picks” are outings where the pair visit various locations—which include private homes, antique shops, garage sales, and more—and buy items in order to resell them at their shop. In addition to the two hosts, the show frequently features their friend and co-worker Danielle, who is the coordinating assistant for the shop.

American Pickers is just one of many “resale” shows to crop up in the last several years. Shows such as Storage Wars, Thrift Hunters, and of course American Pickers, all seem to follow a similar formula: depict the host or hosts finding items to sell; they occasionally find very rare and collectible pieces as well as the occasional fake or disappointing item to add some drama into the mix.

But just how much of the show is real? American Pickers is a reality show, after all, and numerous exposes on reality TV have shown that producers aren’t afraid to fake everything from drama to storylines and even personalities. Does American Pickers fall under “too good to be true” TV? Let’s take a closer look at some of the aspects of American Pickers that have some reality TV watchdogs looking for the man behind the curtain.

Danielle, Frank and Antiques Archeology

Danielle, who is the ‘smiling face’ behind the desk at the main Antique Archeology store, is a longtime friend of store owner Mike Wolfe. The show doesn’t hide their friendship, but it does muddle the details of when exactly Danielle began working at the store. Danielle did not work at the shop until after The History Channel gave Wolfe the greenlight for the show. Some skeptics have wondered if Danielle even does any work around the shop, since almost all of the footage of Danielle in the shop shows her sitting behind a desk answering or making calls on the phone.

Likewise, Frank was not Mike’s business partner until after the show was greenlit by The History Channel; before that, he was a fire inspector who sometimes sold antiques and hobby items on the side. They were not longtime “picker friends” who owned the shop together, as the show suggests. Instead, Frank was brought on board as part of the sales pitch, likely since having two hosts with two different personalities makes for more engaging and interesting television.

When Producers Pick

In real life, you could easily stop at an antique store or even a private home (with the owner’s permission, of course!) to “pick” items for your shop. On reality TV, this simple act is more complicated than the show would have people believe. The show depicts the “pickers” learning about interesting ‘pick’ locations from Danielle or other sources, and then going to those locations unannounced in order to look for some sellable items. But there is something that the show does not depict: the producers visiting each location first.

In order for the show to film at any location, the show’s production team must get written consent from the owner and anyone who may be filmed at the location for the show. In other words, no, Frank and Mike don’t just pop by a random location unannounced.

The producers also reserve the right to look through each location for items that may be interesting to the show’s hosts. It is unknown whether or not the producers plant items—as the producers from the A&E show Storage Wars have been accused of—but it is very probable that they make sure each location has enough items that Frank and Mike would buy on the show before deciding to include the spot on the program.

High Hopes—and Estimates

Most of the antiques and other finds that Frank and Mike purchase on the show are given an estimate which would make for a pretty valuable return, sometimes as much as more than 200% or more of what they paid! The show also makes it seem like it’s fairly easy for someone with knowledge of antiques to find items for a cheap price that they can turn around and sell for big bucks.

The reality, however, is that many of the items featured on the show simply do not have the resale value that American Pickers would have viewers believe. And, as just about anyone who does make a living selling antiques without the benefit of a TV show, it is much harder than it looks.

For example: One of the staple purchases on the show is vintage or antique advertisement signs, usually made from tin. There is a market for these signs, but almost all of them do not have exceptional value unless they are in great condition—which means bright colors and no bends, indents, or other damage. Yet the signs purchased on the show are frequently damaged with missing paint, scratches, bent corners, and are generally in poor to fair condition. One particular sign from the show’s third season was purchased for $250, despite having very obvious damage, and was estimated to sell for $500—yet secondary market values for those types of signs in 2013 did not go above $400 for pristine signs, much less ones with such obvious damage.

The Verdict

American Pickers, like any reality TV show, has elements which are staged by the show’s creative team, producers, and the hosts themselves. The extent of scripted elements on the show is not exactly known; however, we can ascertain that Frank and Danielle’s involvement in the shop was added just for the show, producers definitely scope out locations well before the pickers arrive, and the prices of items featured on the show aren’t always realistic.

The IDEAL TV Plan?

How the hell did we all end up paying for two year contracts for cable in the first place? My roommate John asked me the other day. To be honest, I had no idea. After we cancelled our XFINITY subscription, we decided to look into the stats behind the tv cable business. We broke down the info we found:

  1. Satellite TV provides for 35M Households
  2. Cable TV provides for 48M Households
  3. Phone Companies (U-verse, CenturyLink, FiOS) provide for 7M Households
  4. Millennial Cable Cutters ( YAY! ) 21M Households
  5. Netflix provides for 40M US ONLY Based Consumers (Holly crap, I bet this wasn’t at this rate two years ago.)

After seeing the facts, I started thinking about the specs of a cable package that encompasses all of the needs of its users. The majority of services that we have access to right now are kind of sketchy, or expensive. How is it that for an individual channel on http://www.cbs.com/live-tv/ we are being asked to pay  $6? That is a meal out of the month spent on maybe the option to see the new Late Show with Steve Colbert?

The best of streaming services- like Roku, Amazon Prime, and HBOGO- can only stream so many shows at a good quality- and live. Let’s not forget that hour wait after you know all of your friends have seen the new Game Of Thrones episode (no one wants to be that pal that’s ‘so last hour.’) We have grown so sick of the extra monthly fees for set top boxes or DVR, terrible customer service, and overpriced deals and contracts.

With more and more people entering the services we want on demand- just gotta have it, we would need a plan that accommodates to the following:

-No contract, no credit check.

-170 (at least) channels for like $30. Locals included. With our favorite morning weather reports from: ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS.

-A system that supports 5, or more, simultaneous streams per account (compared to the lame Dish Sling that can only stream on 1)

-SPORTS CHANNELS (for suuure)

We need to  be able to stream what we want, wherever we want it, at a reasonable cost- without worrying about spam, commercials we do not want to see, nor viruses attacking our devices while we are just trying to watch Gilmore Girls for the Nth time.

So where is this pseudo-youtube-like wonder that we would love to have? Nowhere to be found.
